HATHERSAGE MOOR - (21/08/05)

The heather moors above Hathersage to the south west of Sheffield are featured in this latest update to the website. The weather was dry, bright and warm with temperatures reaching 25˚C, to view a map of the area click here.

Our circular walk starts from the car park at Surprise View to the south east of Hathersage Village, from here we headed north towards the distant Higger Tor, (centre photo) along a millstone edge with superb views in the east towards Hathersage.

The terrain is not easy going in parts, although fairly level on the moors there are boulders to negotiate to reach the summit of Higger Tor and marsh lands as we walk south from the remains of a Fort at Carl Wark towards the National Trust's Longshaw Estate.

After crossing the main road linking Chapel-en-le-Frith and Sheffield which also serves as the county boundary between Yorkshire and Derbyshire we enter the Longshaw Estate and follow Burbage Brook south a short distance before heading west through the colourful heather and back to Surprise View.
