CHIRK CASTLE - PAGE 1 - (29/03/05)

The castle was completed early in the 14th century and was built by Roger Mortimer for Edward I. The photo to the left above shows the magnificent iron entrance gates dating from 1719. | ||
Photos above show the beautiful gardens at the Castle, dogs are only permitted on the Estate Walks and in the car park. | ||
There is plenty of spring colour in the gardens bordered by the Ha Ha wall as shown in the centre photo above. The term Ha Ha comes from the French exclamation of surprise; the ditch and wall serves as a boundary and prevents cattle or deer from entering the formal gardens without obstructing the view of the surrounding countryside. | ||

The castle has been occupied ever since it's construction as a defensive fortress and has been home to the Myddleton family since 1595. It was used as a location for the recent BBC Drama, Casanova with Peter O'Toole and David Tennant. To visit page two from our visit click here. | ||
